An exclusive inteview with Hanhis |
| |
| roncli: | | First up, who is hanhis? |
| hanhis: | | Hanhis is Janne Hanhisuanto, a 24-year old male from Finland. I've used few aliases, like Ajatelma, and P!LoT, but mainly I've composed music under my own name, Janne Hanhisuanto. I like to compose mainly electronic music, ambient mainly. Long term dream is to compose background music to games/films/etc. |
| |
| roncli: | | What do you currently do for a living? |
| hanhis: | | My occupation is practical nurse, but now I work as a postman (pat). =) |
| |
| roncli: | | What career path are you currently aiming for? |
| hanhis: | | Not really sure. I enjoy my current work, so no big plans ahead. |
| |
| roncli: | | What got you started in music? |
| hanhis: | | My brother introduced me somewhere in 1996 to Scream Tracker and the modules he downloaded from BBS's. I got very excited of how a computer could "sing", so I wanted to try it myself. I could say that's how I got started with electronic music. |
| |
| roncli: | | What have you used to compose your music with, both in terms of software and hardware? |
| hanhis: | | Scream Tracker for a very very short time. Then I got into Impulse Tracker, used it few years, then moved to FL Studio, and now for Sonar. For hardware, a few MIDI-keyboards, a couple synths. For acoustic instruments, acoustic and electric guitar, piano, saxophone, and flute. |
| |
| roncli: | | That's a nice range of instruments to know! What synths are you currently using? |
| hanhis: | | Not exactly a synth, but as main keyboard Kurzweil PC1X, and Waldorf Blofeld. And various VST synths. |
| |
| roncli: | | Many of the songs you have here at Trax in Space are for one project or another. Could you briefly describe some of the projects that you have worked on? |
| hanhis: | | Search for Celestia is/was a soundtrack to an online RTS from uglywartstudios. Unfortunately, I don't know about its future. Vapaussota-serie was written/performed for short film about Vapaussota, a student work. Currently I'm writing music for Radakan, a single player RPG. |
| |
| roncli: | | Those sound like some fun projects. You also have many songs that are not part of other projects. Of those songs, which are your favorites? |
| hanhis: | | I'd say sunday, since it's a real piano played alive. new wave has certain value, since it was the first song I made with FL Studio. |
| |
| roncli: | | sunday is indeed a beautiful piano piece. What was the inspiration behind that song? |
| hanhis: | | I just had a calm moment in front of the piano on a Sunday, and simply recorded it. |
| |
| roncli: | | Another song I enjoy is cold breath, a song in which you were inspired by a work of Vangelis. Is Vangelis a major influence on your music? Also, what other artists have influenced you as a musician? |
| hanhis: | | The music of Vangelis is very important to me. I would say he's my idol. Elvis is another idol. And I enjoy listening to Kitaro. And there are several artists here in TiS, whose work I greatly admire. As for influences, it could go on forever, as I tend to listen to music from ABBA to Zappa. |
| |
| roncli: | | You mentioned at the beginning that your long term dream was to compose for games and films. Do you see yourself reaching this goal in, say, five years? What other goals do you have as a musician? |
| hanhis: | | Well, as for other goals, there should be another project coming up somewhere next summer, as I start working with a certain singer. I hope I will have an opportunity to work with soundtracks for games and films in five years. |
| |
| roncli: | | Any final words of advice or other comments you'd like to give to our readers? |
| hanhis: | | Well, first I want to say thank you for interview. I want to say thank you, to all who have give feedback regarding my music. There are so many artists on TiS who'd deserve this AotM title more than me, so this was a lottery win for me! Advice? Hmm, keep your feet on the ground. Oh, and have fun with music! |
| |
| roncli: | | Thank you for your time, and good luck with your music in the future! |
