| TiS Happening: "Inspiration" |
Louigi Verona
Member since: Jul 08, 2007 Country: Russia Posts: 1250 | Posted on Mar 11 2008 I announce a happening - a virtual TiS concert called "Inspiration".
*-=Inspiration=-*
( 3-5 April 2008 )
Each interested musician will perform his music live and record his performance to an mp3 file. Then release at TiS and mark it as a special live performance. All of the performances will be gathered into one topic and if possible (and if it interests the administration of the site) put as News.
So the rules are simple:
1. play any of your tunes live. Performance must be made especially for this happening, do not use a performance you made years ago.
2. release the tune at TiS and tag it "inspiration live".
3. do it until April the 2nd. The happening will be held 3rd, 4th, 5th of April. (read section "How will the event work" below)
Additional:
There is also an image section. You can submit any images and photo collages. Images can be themed around the happening itself (art work displaying the happening name, like an invitation flyer) or can just be works of art and humour. Important: all images should be made especially for the happening.
You can also submit texts. Important: all texts should be written especially for the happening. Other than that there are no limitations.
If noone will get interested, it is ok, since I plan to perform 10-15 tunes which will hopefully be interesting enough and fill blank space but it will make this happening a one man show, so I encourage everyone to take part!
How will the event work
-Apart from having a large topic with all the submitted art, depending on the number of artists involved we will have compos.
-Images get submitted DURING the event, into the main topic.
-Again, depending on the number of people involved it may be logic to ask Inner Space to broadcast all the entries during the happening along with the usual material (or instead)
-If the administration of TiS gets interested, it is possible to create an event page where the links to all the works will be documented, along with all the images and commentry.
How do I perform live?
There are many ways. One of the simpliest methods is to use a sound editor to record wave out mix of your soundcard while you are using your sequencer to play a tune. You can mix it live or play the whole thing or do both - mix some parts in live mode and play the leads and stuff. If you are using ASIO, there may be problems with recording from the wave out of your soundcard. In that case there might be conflicts and such stuff, but that might be solved with a second soundcard.
Another way is to just record your performance with a mic or with a second computer.
Comments appreciated.

So can I like, record and put it up tomorrow, and then it will be ready to go come event time? I'm going to be traveling during that time in April and won't have much in the way of internet access.
What about songs with multiple parts, you suggested we could just play the leads or something live, but what about "semi-live" performances? Could I play one part live and record it, then play the next part and record it, and build up a multitrack "live" performance that wasn't actually done realtime?
Also, how much production is allowed? If I record myself playing an instrument or two live with multiple channels, can I go in and adjust their levels after the fact to make it mix better or should I leave it how it was?
I hope this doesn't come across as nitpicky, I'm just curious how I should go about trying to record something
Last question: is this TiS-members only? Can I suggest this event to non-TiS people, and then have them register?
Thanks for putting this together Louigi! |

Yep, sure, just don't forget to tag it "inspiration live" so that we can later find it.
It is ok to release a tune DURING the event as well, but then you should tell me about it.

Just be sure to preserve the live performance feel. Remember - in a concert, production is of less importance, what's important is the soul. I would recommend no post production, but I can't force it.
Last question: is this TiS-members only? Can I suggest this event to non-TiS people, and then have them register?
Yep, sure - all non-TiS members are welcome! Besides, if they register, they become TiS members anyway! =) |

Member since: Jul 08, 2007 Country: Russia Posts: 1250 | Posted on Mar 12 2008 No time limit, just watch the file size limit. Can't say how big is the limit though. You can record one big performance and then just cut it to pieces 10-15 Mb each, I guess that'll be alright. |

I have no evidence to support of course, but please believe me - the idea came independently (it is a bit different anyway). In fact, I had this idea a while ago but just came about to actually realizing it. |

So, it has to be my own tune (no covers allowed)? |

Are you going to mix this into a big long recording, or just posting a page of song links on event day?
You mentioned asking Allen One about streaming it, so I figure you have something like that planned, but I wanted to ask and make sure. Tomorrow morning I'm going to pitch it to the music students at the computer lab.
What kind of promotions are you doing?
I'm very excited about this, I spent a while with my brother today practicing one of my songs so between the two of us we can do the majority of the song live and then record the output. I can't wait. |

Member since: Jul 08, 2007 Country: Russia Posts: 1250 | Posted on Mar 13 2008 Just gather this into a topic with links. I will mail Allen One today about this and if he gets interested, additional exposure will be the Inner Space radio station.
Making it into one big recording isn't good since it will be Gigabytes. Tunes which I plan to play altogether may take more than an hour of music.
Look at it as a big festival, only virtual.
The topic can be made as News or like an Interview format, like an Event, but that has to come from the administration and so far noone from the forum regulars like slammy or roncli who seem to have some admin privileges or at least have contact with Saurin haven't commented on this yet.
I am happy you are excited, I am excited too! ^_^ |

Seventy two minutes of audio uncompressed is 640 Megabytes. I'm not sure, and don't quote me on this, but I may have hosting for a file around that size. I'll be in touch as we find out how big this might be, if you might entertain the notion of releasing a recording of them as played on Inner Space. Not a huge deal, but my real agenda here is that I'd love to have a canonical 'performance' of it that I can burn on a few CDs.

I think we can safely assume it will be a thread on these forums plus any other web presence we create. It'd be cool if we could get it officialized but I wouldn't count on it.
I caught the attention of four students in class today by telling them that this might be an opportunity for exposure to a group that doesn't often listen to their styles of music, I have my fingers crossed that they'll be interested. All four are in my opinion very talented.
Allen One, thanks so much for streaming this event. Being able to say it's going up on internet radio seems instrumental in approaching the topic to people, and of course there's a sense of pride associated with saying "why yes, I'm aiming to be involved in a project that's going on my internet friend's radio station." |

Drivespace for us will not be a consideration as far as our part goes because we're dealing with that resolution of mp3. However, I do not know what TIS's file maximums are and so on, so you will need to take that into consideration if Louigi and the rest of you decide to post raw wave files for collaboration or download... which I don't think TIS allows currently. I'm sure Roncli would be happy to elaborate if the question is posed to him.

As much as I'd love to, I know as much about the situation as you do.

Awesome idea, Louigi, Count me in. |

There is even no need to tell me you are in - just release the song, tag it 'inspiration live' and when I will gather all songs, you'll be in. |
