SoOn is sponsoring a competition in the spirit of the Scene compo tradition and to make it a bit more interesting we’ll buy you a beer (or two) if you end up in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.

1st place prize is $20
2nd place prize is $10
3rd place prize is $5

Here are the rules:

1. You must use at least 10 seconds of one or more of the 10 samples provided. This sample must be identified (via test). But…. You can time shift, reverse, transpose – do anything you’d like in any software and throw it all together in any style with any additional sounds you desire. Do something glorious – make a mockery of the contest – it doesn’t matter – whatever is best wins!

There are samples at this profile

http://www.traxinspace.com/profile/2009sooncontest

Or at this URL

http://2009contest.soonlabel.com

2. Prize payment will be made via paypal – that is where I have the money for this event stored. If you can’t get a free account then I can’t help you.

3. A minimum of five (5) entries are needed to trigger payment of the prizes.

4. Entries are open until 23:59:59 October 31st 2009 GMT

5. Voting starts 00:00:00 November 1st 2009 GMT and ends November 7th 2009 GMT

6. Voting will be tallied by Tricky on TiS. Send him a TiS PM or submit your vote by emailing 2009vote at soonlabel.com which will be forwarded to him. His decision of the winners is final.

7. Entry URLs will be posted to this thread by the entrant or Tricky or myself. Email 2009vote at soonlabel.com with your URL if you do not have or want a TiS account.

8. SoOn members are eligible to compete – only I can’t since it’s my money and that would make little sense…. Wouldn’t it?

9. I’d like to thank all of the SoOn members who contributed samples for the contest

I think that covers it.

A typo to clear up

You have to identify the sample(s) you used by a text comment somewhere.

I'll also announce some voting rules...

As with my Photohack compo you can give 5 points to your number 1, 3 to your number 2, and 1 to your number 3.

However, because there is money involved we do not allow a tie for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. If two people get tied for one of these places the tie break rule will be put in place.

When two entries are tied for first place basically the one who got 5 points most wins, still a tie there, the one with 3 points most, still got a tie then, the first one who sent me their votes and who actually voted for one of the tied parties will automatically cast the final vote. That doesn't happen through PM, I just look which of the tying parties he/she gave most points.

That sums up my part in this compo

Hi Solo, great!

I hope you decide to compose an entry.

It looks as though most people are choosing to DL from the web.
I guess I should make a sample pack to make that easier for people.

and here is the 15 meg sample pack plus html instructions

A few questions.....

In addition to 10 seconds worth of each of the 10 samples...are you allowed to use your own samples?

When you say 10 seconds of each sample...must it be 10 seconds in a row or can the 10 seconds of usage be scattered throughout the song (IE 5 seconds in one part and 5 in another)?

you can do *anything* as long as you use 1 or more SoOn samples in some fashion. No one is going to use a stopwatch - 10 seconds is just a guideline.

so you can use lots of your own samples - or performances - or VSTi

The SoOn samples are there to present something to wrap this contest around. Other than that we'd like to see maximum creativity.

you can use anything else with the sample(s) in any style you'd like using any combination of additional samples, performance, VSTi, buzz machines, etc. Maximum creativity is the goal and the SoOn samples are used to wrap around the compo.

I posted this at CTG

if you do not post your entry on the traxinspace you must email the link to 2009vote at soonlabel.com in order to have either Tricky or me post it at Traxinspace for you.

If you need hosting for your song I can provide that.

Of course - you can post your tune where ever you'd like and drum up as many votes as you'd like.

ANYONE can vote - just PM tricky at traxinspace or use 2009vote at soonlabel.com

Louigi Verona has submitted the 2nd entry to the $25 2009 SoOn Compo

http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/2009-SoOn-contest-song-hosting/3009_2_final.mp3

It is called Somewhere in 3009

And this entry used the percussion, keyboard progression, and field recording from Europe samples.

Good, we're getting somewhere now
And I like LV's entry I gotta say.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
Clones said not to enter as he's the organizer of this compo.
I myself won't enter not because I ain't such a great musician, but because I don't want to give into the temptation to influence the voting as overseer of the voting. And to prevent some "evil" stories about me being a fraud in the unlikely event that I should win. For that reason I also deny myself the right to vote. I don't think my voting would be 100% fair since I know the votes of other people.
I want to be 100% fair and only process the votes as they come to me.
