Hi all - I am working on a simple new feature to be added in the next few weeks. It is an extension of the forums. However I need a list of discussion topics/questions. They can be philosophical questions or questions about personal opinions/interests. They should not be Yes/No questions though, but open ended. I'll be creating a list of potential discussion questions to start with, so please send me your ideas.

A couple of examples:
1) If you were stranded on an island with one instrument - what would it be and why?
2) Who had a bigger impact on music - Nirvana or Madonna? Why?

etc

Hmm, sounds intriguing! OK, here are a couple of philosophical music-related questions.

1. Does music have the power to influence people's character?

2. Which of the arts has had the greatest impact on the world as we know it -- music, visual art (paintings etc.) or performance art (plays, ballet, etc.)?

3. If Beethoven/Bach/Ravel/[Insert Famous Composer Here] were alive today, would they still write 'classical' music?

4. Everyone knows that OpenMPT is the best tracker of all time. Why do some people still not understand this?

I would have divided those into four categories - music, visual, written (books are not really visual art) and performance. Just a thought.

Well, I work in a public library so I was morally obliged to correct you. And I will never forgive you this oversight. Ever.

Humans were built with two ears, not one.
-------------------------------------------------

Why, then, does virtually all music from the beginning of time until now use scales built in such a way as if they have to accommodate the task of putting the same notes in both ears at once?

In other words, why not put different scales in different ears (one per each ear) to enable many more possibilities far as possible chords and simultaneous notes of "in key" expression?
***********************************
For example here's a short example of the usual 7-note scale remapped and slightly tweaked to form a bin-aural version (4 notes in one ear, 3 in the other):

Note: for the above sound sample use headphones: it will not separate the sounds in 100% bin-aural properly with speakers

Springing from Spectra's post...

Why do people only have two ears?

Why do we compose music and sound in a predominantly horizontal plane? In other words, why don't surround sound systems generally go above and below as well?

I have asked myself this very question, but a better thing then surround already exists and it requires only TWO speakers (unfortunately those two speakers need to be on headphones though)

If you guys havn't seen this yet, you should get your headphones up and listen

Okay, here I got another lame discussion topic....

Which music instrument would you identify yourself with to impress a member of the opposite sex? (And explanation of why that instrument refers to you may be added).

Lame enough?

Here's a nice juicy one for you:

"What drugs do the best musicians abuse the most and why?"

...I'd like to see that one float a bit
