1Overall Description
This 6/8 synth-rock/fantasy blend from Roncli is intriguing, but suffers from a bit of an identity crisis and is further held back by melody issues. "Cent Main Theme" is still an enjoyable 2-and-a-half minutes, and the fact that Ron was clearly swinging for the fences here helps a lot. But it's a solid base hit, not a home run.

The song is bolstered by a strong rock-style backbeat and gets off to a rousing start with a brass and string call-and-answer fanfare, but this turns out to be the song's refrain, putting the song in the awkward position of having the emotional climax right at the beginning. The verses don't hold a candle to the brightness of the refrain, sporting a limp synth melody in the first verse and then some guitar solos that are much more promising in the later verses. But while the guitar solos are fun, they really don't help establish much of a strong melody.

A big part of the problem here is that the song really doesn't have much of an identity style-wise. The strings and brass say "Fantasy!" The drumming and guitar solos say "Rock!" And the background instrumentation says "Synth Pop!" Rock and fantasy are hard enough to blend as it is, and adding synth pop to the mix ends up muddying the waters.

This could have been a real mess, but fortunately Ron keeps it all under control with clean samples, clear mixing, and an exciting atmosphere, and the result is actually fun to hear. There's a lot to criticize, but there's also a lot to enjoy, especially if you make the effort to surround yourself in the song's atmosphere.

That's part of the problem too, though... if you have to make an effort to enjoy a song, that means the song has some problems. And that's the position I'm in. This is a clearly a good song; it's just not a great one.
