| "This Is The Night" is an insanely catchy dose of synth-pop. It's simple, it's repetitive, it's way too happy-sounding, and there's a part of me that kinda wants to be annoyed, and yet I just can't help myself. I like this tune. It makes me happy. And that makes me wonder if something's wrong with me, but hey, I'm too happy to worry about things like that while this song is playing in the background. If I had to sum up this song in one word, that word would be "happy." There's absolutely nothing fancy here about the composition of this song. The song basically kicks off with the refrain first, so Zepsi takes a huge musical risk by putting the emotional climax of the song right at the beginning. But it also establishes the melodic hook that the verse-melody is based around. Zepsi also keeps the emotional dynamics pretty much level through the entire song, which holds back the melodic development but also neatly sidesteps the problem of having nowhere to build to after opening with the climax. The melody itself is quite simple, and is delivered with a variety of similar-sounding synths that add just enough variety to the mix. And the simplicity of the melody makes it very, very catchy. I first heard this song about 2 months ago, and I've found myself humming or whistling this melody out of nowhere at some oddly random moments. This is VERY catchy. But the most distinctive and clever feature of the song is the way the lyrics are handled. The lyrics are sung, but the voice is then run through such a heavy array of synthesizing effects and filters that in the end, the lyrics are nearly unintelligible, basically turning the voice into a synth-lead. You're left with just the faintest trace of lyrics, especially the seminal phrase "This is the night," and it gives the song a very unique feel. It works. It really, really works. Make no mistake: this is not advanced music. It sure as hell ain't Beethoven. But "This Is The Night" is a very good reminder that, sometimes, a song doesn't have to be highly advanced or intricately composed. Sometimes it's enough for a song to just leave you feeling very, very happy. Download this one, play it a few dozen times, and have some fun. You won't regret it. I just wouldn't recommend humming the melody out loud at a funeral. Just some friendly advice for ya. | ||
