| xTr1m serves up a very pleasant journey into fantasy with "From Morningstar to Midnight," a multi-part suite with a soaring atmosphere but also a lack of cohesivness that holds the song back. The strong point of the song is clearly the atmosphere and emotion. The song maintains a sense of awe and wonder all the way through, reminiscent of sweeping vistas, low flyovers above rolling hills, and running through the woods. I'm instantly reminded of pretty much every fantasy setting I've ever seen in a movie at once. The mixing and instrument selection are top-notch as well. Everything in here is clean and polished, and while the high pan flute sometimes hits some brief moments of sounding sour during some of the note bends, even this is forgiveable and adds an organic touch to the song. The song shows off multiple melodies, and all of them are quite pleasant. Unfortunately, all of them are brief and never get fully developed due to the choppy structure of the song, which is clearly the song's greatest weakness. If ever a piece of music needed Ritalin, this is it. xTr1m jumps too quickly from section to section, with transitions that sound rushed and forced and really break up the flow of the song. It would have helped greatly if X had just stuck with one or two of these sections, fleshed them out more fully and worked on a smoother transition. This would have left him with something more along the lines of "Ancient Stories" by Awesome, which to me remains the gold-standard of fantasy music. Or X could've gone for broke and kept everything, but fleshed it all out and smoothed out the transitions, which probably would've resulted in a 12 minute song but which would've been far more rewarding to listen to. Instead, this is what we're left with: 5 minutes of pleasant atmosphere, composed of choppy segments of unfulfilled potential brilliance. It sounds quite nice, but in the end its still lacking. | ||
