| Frantic, frenzied and feverish, "Antivirus" by Tyr is a rollicking romp through the wilds of drum'n'bass. There's a little something for everyone, even a guy with more melodic tastes such as myself, so you'll be doing yourself a favor by at least giving this a try no matter what your normal musical preferences are. As is to be expected with a d'n'b tune, the backbone here is, of course, the breakbeats. Tyr doesn't exactly hit any new territory here, but he plugs in a couple of servicable drum loops and makes effective use of them to craft some nicely active rhythms. On top of these, he adds in some reasonably melodic synth lines, mostly in lower registers. It's all relatively simple stuff, but the song is only 2:18 in length, so there's not enough time for the simplicity to get old. Layered in at the very top is a piercing, pulsating synth-violin playing an insanely fast modulated melody, and this is what really gives the song its atmosphere. The name "Antivirus" is very apropos, because that synth-violin readily brings to mind a fast-paced, hectic battle at the cellular level against an invading army of microbes, with the defenders scrambling to stave off disaster, always seemingly a split-second away from failing. Anytime a song can bring a mental image to mind this vividly, the artist has defenitely done something right. Alas, the song is just a little too simple, and that holds it back. But as I mentioned before, at least Tyr showed some considerable restraint by keeping the playing time short. Some artists would try to milk this out for 5 or 6 minutes, but Tyr jumps in, accomplishes what he wants to do as quickly as possible, and then jumps out. That always earns my respect. Definitely worth a download, no matter what your normal preferences are musically. This genre is not my normal cup o' tea, but drinking tea all the time gets boring anyway. Grab this song now! | ||
