1Overall Description
A simple trancer with piano rave breaks at times. There's really not a whole lot to this one, but there doesn't have to be. Unfortunately, it seems some of the finer details were neglected, and while this song is still quite enjoyable, it doesn't quite reach its full potential to be really entertaining.

2Creativity Description
The focus of the creativity of this piece shifts. When it's feeling trancy, the focus is on the sound effects and the texture of the synths. When it's in the rave parts, the focus is on making the melody interesting to listen to. The focus can be a good thing, because you get a fun piano line to listen to, and while the fundamental feeling of the song doesn't change, you get what amounts to a really good change of pace that makes the song seem shorter than it really is. But the focus can also be a bad thing because it seems as though the artist neglects the other parts of the song. If you concentrate on the parts that the artist concentrated on, you're doing well off, but if you're listening to this song as a whole, there just seems to be this feeling that the song's incomplete, that more could have been done to really make this song stand out in its genre. Knowing this artist's tendancy for often going overboard with creativity, it's a surprise that there's a gap in it with this one.

3Artistic License Description
The artist clearly set out to do something, and in my mind he accomplished it. You have trance and piano rave together in one song, and it's done almost seemlessly, save for a messy transition in the middle. Despite having clearly defined sections, the song flows as one, and that's what makes Hybrid work.

4Arrangement Description
The song starts trancy, goes to rave, and then after a clumsy break goes back to trancy, finishing up rave-like again. A simple structure. Getting into the arrangement itself, the artist shows off how to make a track of these styles, with good percussion and layered synths. The only part I would really fault is that the piano arrangement seems very forced and unnatural at times. It's more the chords than the solo, but I felt that a lot more attention could have gone into making the piano better in this one by really fine tuning the sequencing, making more use of the dynamics that the instrument provides.

5Sound Quality Description
The first big thing I noticed with the sound quality in this one is that it seems boxed. The compression really boxes in the song. This allows the kick to come through without ruining the piece, but when it's not there you get what happens at 6:50 in this one, where the dynamics of the piece expand to fill the box, the best example to illustrate the problem.

Also, something about the piano seemed off. It seems to play at the same velocity throughout, and the sample that's being played has a lot of punch. It pierces through the song and demands attention, despite the synth layers doing their thing. If I had to guess, I would say that the artist realized this and tried to compensate for this by lowering the overall volume of the piano, resulting in it almost taking a back seat if it weren't for that sharp punch it gives with every note hit. This isn't the approach to take, but rather to lower the velocity and up the gain on the piano to remove the punch and keep the full bodied sound going. It would also allow for the artist to reach for that punch at key times should it be needed, and while having that punch on every note hurts the song, using it at a dynamic point in the song is very, very effective.

6Does it work as a piece of music Description
It clearly works as a piece of music, all of the flaws above are pretty minor. This piece is quite enjoyable, and at least worth a download to listen to the higher quality version.

Besides the musics, it was the friendly atmosphere of the rave party that made it special. No fightings as you see in nightclubs, everyone was looking friendly and people were there for one reason only... to have fun. I think you would have liked it ron.

I've read and heard enough about raves to understand what they were all about, but never really knew the kind of music that was played there.

Delightful. It's always nice to read your reviews roncli. Great tune, great review. I don't know if you guys ever were hard ravers, but this tune actually reminded me of those days back in time, where we were after flyers to see where the next "black" or "illegal" rave was held (mostly abandon industries in the outskirt of the city). There was a big, dark, deep and dunk place, lots of speakers, a DJ and musics like this one here ;o) ... again great song, great review.

Fair enough on the pianos, although said 90's piano tracks would probably get a similar comment... piano just doesn't sound good at the same velocity. What I meant by the creativity part is that you put a lot of creative polish on the trance elements during the trance part, and a lot of polish on the rave elements during the rave part. The textures and sound effects during the trance part is top notch, and the emotion in the rave part is really high. But the other elements are bland. The arrangement of the trance bit isn't that exciting at all, and the backing to the piano doesn't do much either. It is clear that your focus in those parts were on meshing the styles together, and that worked really well... that's what you were looking to achieve, and you succeeded. But these parts taken out by themselves don't really work well, and that's why the mix of the two genres works, because one section requires the other section to make an emotional impact on the listener. Now, taking the extra step and making it so that those parts could have stood out on their own and yet *still* manage to combine them into one piece would've been fantastic, if not mind blowing. That by itself would probably get this to 4 1/2 stars, and unboxing the sound of this thing to get the full dynamic effect would certainly push this to 5.

Great detailed review roncli! :D. It's funny, you've pinpointed some of the simplicity of the old skool vibe, as being a problem with the track, when in fact, it's what I wanted to achieve ;). As you know from my other tracks with piano, the is alot of exressive playing where velocity is concerned - When I played the chords, and the solo, I went into the sequencer and purposely set the velocity the same - just like the early 90's piano dance tracks... ;). As for the chords, they sound exactly how I intend them to be - the biggest problem is actually with the first solo - I didn't take the time to properly quantize it, and it at times, is actually off beat. ;) I'm not sure what you mean by neglecting the other parts of the track though, maybe you should explain that one a bit better to me, as I'm not sure which part you mean, but, the works I put into the build up trancier parts, are where I spent most of the time - the piano bits were quickly made in comparison, and just like their 16 -17 year old counterparts, remain techincally immature, designed more for the average E head to dehydrate too, rather than normal people who appreciate real music to get off on! so to speak! :D Your analysis is extremely interesting though, fucking good read really.. Awesome to get an American's perspective on a older style which was never popular on American shores, as it was in the dark underground of early 1990's hardcore music in the raves across the UK ;). Illegal Rave, FTW!... One way to look at the piece though, is to take some complex techno riffs that The Prodigy make today, and compare it the stuff they made in 1991. In 1991, The Prodigy's material was technically immature, just like the piano-rave sections of this track! While today their stuff is mind blowing. I 100% agree that this is a long way off in the creativity department as some of my other tracks - but what I acheived with it, was exactly what I wanted, and I'm still 100% pleased :D Thanks again roncli for the awesome review though! :D
