1Overall Description
In a way, this reminded me of Bach's Prelude (the famous one!), probably because of the extensive use of arpeggios (the fairly static [tonic dominant tonic'] movement in the bass provides the basis for this). This results in the melodic sections which tend to fall in the second half of the bar, leading into the chord change. That's not a bad thing - quite the contrary, in fact. It provides a real sense of movement, and renders the expository melodic passages poignant.

The musical content itself is, in a word, charming. The composer did not strive to produce a monumental work; rather, he improvised on the basis of his feelings. The simplicity of the arpeggiated chords mirrors the simplicity of love; its lack of pretension. It is not a piece to be listened to idly. My only gripe is the (accidental?) accidental at around 4.16, which just doesn't work for me. I think that it may indeed have been unintentional.

From a technical perspective, the sound of the piano is good; however, I feel that the reverb was a tad excessive. Although a piano should never be recorded in a dead room, too much reverb can sometimes muddy the sound. Slight reverb and good pedalling is, I believe, all that is required. The reverb is, however, the only technical quibble I have with the piece. The production quality is exceptional in all other respects.

Although it may seem that I've pointed out many negatives, I must note that there is a plethora of positives I could mention: the subtle changes in tone colour as the right hand moves from very slightly polyphonic to nearly wholly monophonic; the intelligent use of rubato, which serves to emphasise without going overboard; the good use of dynamics; and much, much more.

Overall, a wonderful piece of music, and one that I would highly recommend.

Have a cigar for the most gratuitous use of the word 'poignant' :P ;) Excellent review. I agree about the reverb being too present, although dropping the LP-filter a smidge on the reverb would probably work just as well; it's a bit too bright for the level. This song and review are both outstanding. Din agrees as well :D

After listening to this track and taking time to read this review I think I understand why you entered my review compo with this review. (And the track itself is absolutely great too). Tricky agrees too... :)
