1Overall Description
What a pleasant surprise to find this in my review queue. IDM and ambient aren't styles that I frequent often, but I found this track to be a pleasant, engaging ride from start to finish. The grounded bassline and evolving pads contrast very nicely with the somewhat frantic percussion introduced around 1:00, and the relaxing nature of them sort of hides the deceptively fast clip that this song moves along at. I would like to point out the very good use of reverb here, every instrument seems to have some, but not the same amount, and instead of the "drowning in reverb" feeling many tracks seem to have, there's a real sense of space that adds a lot to the track, particularly when the filter sweeps come in around 3:00. The whole track is like one long buildup and then breakdown near the end, and while this means that there is always at least one new element, I did feel that it had gotten just a tad repetitive near the 4:40 mark. I couldn't help but think that perhaps one of the other instruments besides drums ought to change, or be introduced. This is a minor concern though - I've already been recommending this track to friends, and I've found that I enjoy listening to it again and again. Excellent work, epoq! I want to hear more!
