Artist's description:
Dawn. Another day at sea. He's lost count how many days it's been. Fifteen? Sixteen? Not much water left now.

He lies on his back in the lifeboat, listening to the rhythm of the boat: the splash of the waves, the idle flapping of the hastily rigged sail, the ropes on the mast.

The sun climbs higher.

His vacant eyes stare up at the harsh blue sky, the angry white of the sun burning his pupils unnoticed. An albatross hangs in the air in the distance, turns towards him, circles his boat.

The hours pass, and the albatross is gone. Just him, the sun, and the rhythm of the boat.

Thanks Mrsix, roncli! I'm glad you enjoyed the track. I *did* have fun playing with both time signatures and expectations. :) I really appreciate the feedback. // Thanks also to gilgamesh and Din, who I didn't reply to. I also appreciate your feedback. :)

Laying a 6/8 line over a 7/8 line for 3 measures and then filling in 3 notes on the 6/8 line to catch up to the 7/8 line before playing the last 7/8 measure... Just when I thought I had this song peg'd, that came and threw me for a loop and made me listen even closer. Some amazing musicianship here.

Hmmmm, 7/4 nice! I like this, great song. I really like Louigi's remix, and I also really like this. Both great in equal measure!

Wow, this tune is going to my favourites list in this instant. The hypnotizing pattern of bells create a mysterious flowing atmosphere. I read the description after listening and I thought that you must be a big fan of Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea". It sure is one of my all time favourite novels I've read. ;)

And I'm sure I meant to say "sound LIKE the fringes" rather than...yeah. It's been a long day.

This sounds exactly as you've described it, although it sounds like being hopelessly lost in general, after the whole experience has started wearing on the mind. The slightly detuned flute and pitch bends sound the fringes of sanity gradually fraying, with madness and panic creeping ever nearer. Very well done, monsieur.

Thanks Clones! I'm glad it makes sense for the picture I've got in my head. :)

Thanks Space Walk! I'm glad you could "see" the music. And a great in-depth comment, too! :D

Thanks, C-H. :) I'm glad it's not "Barry-ish" - I wanted to do something very different. I'm glad it worked...

Great soundtrack-style, great visions. Bells are quite hypnotic.

Exactly, yes. Another string to Barry's Cello ;)

Agreed. This takes distance from his usual style, but only shows how talented he is, since he has done a tremendous work.

And.. after a few more listenings to it, I'd dare to say.. this is not Barry-ish at all..

Amazing Barry. Just amazing. The insertion of elements like sun, heat, dried days, salt water and being lost are like work of a master in this one. That bell should be there as well indicating the wind. The choice of native and tribal drum sets is fabulous. The pan flute is like the fly of the condor and takes your perspective into bird view, actually making the boat visible inside you mind down under over the ocean. The northern African influenced background instruments bring the taste of sand and dried ground into the mind. Space Walk says this is a complete achievements of sound and music, since it tells, indicates and pictures exactly what the description says. Faaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic.

This is very nice Barry - it sounds like it is a track for a movie about a castway in the south pacific.

Actually.. I'm gonna look into the .it file, yes.. Probably, I'll learn new things out of it. Thanks ;)

Yes, a little. On purpose. And then I used slight pitch slides on some of the sustained notes, too, to move it by small parts of a semitone. (Take a look at the source in OpenMPT if you like.) :) I guess that I was inspired by the Arabic etc. microtonal scales, though.

My "exotic scale" was a really wild guess. And certainly not an educated one, just.. more I went by ear, and it sounds like some of the ancient arabic pieces I have at home, on CDs. But so, the flute is slightly out of tune? (for my personal edification)

Thanks C-H! That was a quick comment. ;) I'll take another look at the bells - I agree, they're a bit loud. Thanks for the suggestion. // For the panflute - it's not an exotic scale, as far as I know. I've moved it around the base note by 1/3 to 2/3 of a semitone. :) // I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Most evocative, yes. The sun, the slow and almost hypnotizing rolling of the water.. Technically, this is well done, again, Barry. My only "gripe" would be about the bells. Maybe a tad too "present" or in more technical words, too loud. Maybe EQ them, high band, and reduce it a little. But that's about it. Now, on a more emotional perspective, this is both langourous and.. slightly disturbing. Because of this light off-tune on the pan flute. Or is it some arabic scale? (where is Spectra whne I nedd him? ;) ) Afterall.. being alone at sea with the sun for only companion is not always.. paradize ;) . Great ambience.. great track, Barry!
