Artist's description:
I just wanted to see what Barry van Oudtshoorn's "Dawn" would have sounded like if it were put together using a more specialized orchestral library. The original piece is simply stunning, and this doesn't do anything but change the sample set. I didn't go through the process of fine-tuning much of anything besides volumes, because I wanted to keep it as true to the original as possible, even though I think it could benefit from some velocity changes.

For anyone with EWQLSO Gold XP Pro and Colossus you can have a look at the source (nothing is really changed besides the VST assignments and some different instrument assignments on various notes).

CC11 is the standard for using expression in volume. Unlike CC7 which is the standard midi volume control, CC11 is meant to be adjusted throughout the sequence, whereas CC7 is usually used to adjust master volume. It should work that way in Kontakt, at least, because it does in Kompakt and Play.

I'll do the same for you - I would think you should be the one to choose the instrument sounds you like best. Make a "super Dawn" :)

I'd be happy to export each instrument and/or channel if either of you would like me to...

Yes, I know what you mean about resolution. :( I tend to do the "solo and make realistic" thing to the lead instruments more than the backing (when I do it), mainly because I'm fairly lazy. // Let's see now - CC11 - that's Expression (Coarse). Hmm - I'll have to see what that does in Kontakt. Thanks!

you two could export wavs and merge the versions that way...

Hey, no problem. I think that the horns in your original are greater for the purpose, but the strings here help a little bit. The real trouble is what I've mentioned before with the varying sample velocities. If you have a LOT of time to put into a piece (not that I honestly do this all the time, though I should) than you should really solo each part and make sure it sounds realistic. That's why I moved to MIDI sequencing... a higher resolution than in tracking (Renoise, OpenMPT, etc) to tamper with midi controllers etc. CC:11 adds so much depth, for instance. I'm glad you appreciate it. It's meant to compliment the piece, if anything, I was mostly just curious about those string samples. I would have merged the two if I had the chance, honestly. Again, your original is stunning, I felt compelled (:

This isn't bad, TwiTerror! I'm gonna have to see about getting a copy of EWQLSO when I have some money. :) There is quite a lot of reverb, and I think that that makes the bottom end sound a bit muddy at times. Oh - I like that little accent at the end. :) // I think that part of the difficulty in doing something like this is that we both write with our particular sampleset in mind, so occasionally there are a few abrupt cutoffs and blurred runs (like the brass just before the harp section). But you can certainly hear the difference, and there's a distinctive "Whelchel" sound coming through. :D // Thanks for doing this, TwiTerror - I really appreciate the fact that you went to so much effort over it.
