Year: 2008

Artist's description:
This was a piece I had a performed live on December 4th, 2008. I wrote it between Sept and Dec of that year, and it is a reflection of my feelings during that time - one hell of an emotional roller coaster, to say the least.

Instrumentation:
Violin, Cello, Oboe, Bb Clarinet

A Lost Dream in an Unwelcome Reality (2008) is inspired by a small child’s journey from consciousness into a dream which eventually becomes a terrible nightmare. The piece begins with the cello representing the steady pulse of consciousness which is slowly lost as the child drifts into dream. At first playful, the dream is slowly transfigured into a more unpleasant fantasy. A passionate and innocent oboe passage transitions the previously pure dream into utter chaos as once beautiful illusions are horribly transfigured and engulf the child. At last, the journey ends in a sharp but welcome return to reality.

A very contemporary and a very interesting piece. I love all music that has a story or an explanation behind it, it makes it all so much more enjoyable and curious. This is one of those pieces that you can sit down and listen to with eyes closed just to hear all the small details and subtilities that the music has to offer. I especially like the piece towards the ending, when the chaos breaks lose. Great use of instruments and great work in making it sound authentic.
