Mar 26, 2010 - If you arranged information in your autobiography thematically, which events in your life would you group together?

Response - 1. I was born a poor black child to a Polish family
2. catholic school, penguins and corporal punishment
3. dream of my body flying through my inner city neighborhood
4. abducted by aliens
5. aliens program me to create music obsessively
6. as a practical joke the music they program me to create is very bad
7. aliens return me to my family after 3 weeks
8. no one noticed I was gone
8.5 I start to learn electric guitar
9. after watching star trek I try to mind meld with a Siamese cat
10 I succeed and the experience alters the alien programming - now the music I create is not only bad but sounds like Siamese tom cats fighting over a mate.

17 I realize the aliens programmed me to write microtonal music

21 in a bold move Charlie encourages me to combine Blue Grass, Disco, and Death Metal into a new microtonal Polka genre.
22 Charlie recruits his friends Buddha, Gandhi and Stanley to join the polka band.
23 The name "Swinging Polecats" is decided upon. We mail ourselves to the polka capital of the world, Chicago, by UPS ground .
24 The Chicago area is swept up in microtonal polka fever as the trademark 3 piece microtonal vocal chitters entrance the vodka drinking Polish American community.

Jun 21, 2009 - Today is Roncli's first day as a married man. What should his theme song be?

Response - Tom Lehrer

When you are old and Gray

The most popular type of popular song is
of course the love song, and I'd like to
illustrate several subspecies of this
form during the evening.

First of all,
the type of love song where the fellow
tells the girl that although the years
ahead will almost certainly destroy
every vestige of her already dubious
charms, that nonetheless his love for
her will shine on forever through the
years, you know.

Another example of
stark realism in the popular song.

This particular example is called When
You Are Old And Gray, and I'd like to
dedicate it to anyone in the audience
who is still in love with each other.

Since I still appreciate you,
Let's find love while we may.
Because I know I'll hate you
When you are old and gray.

So say you love me here and now,
I'll make the most of that.

Say you love and trust me,
For I know you'll disgust me
When you're old and getting fat.

An awful debility,
A lessened utility,
A loss of mobility
Is a strong possibility.
In all probability
I'll lose my virility
And you your fertility
And desirability,
And this liability
Of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility,
So let's act with agility
While we still have facility,
For we'll soon reach senility
And lose the ability.

Your teeth will start to go, dear,
Your waist will start to spread.
In twenty years or so, dear,
I'll wish that you were dead.

I'll never love you then at all
The way I do today.
So please remember,
When I leave in December,
I told you so in May.

Jun 20, 2009 - Is sheet music an outdated model for music?

Response - No - recordings do not carry the performance information - only the result - and without directions the result may be difficult or impossible to recreate. Of course.... if you are willing to eliminate reproduction and/or performance by entities other than the originator you can happily toss out the paper... but I don't think you will.

May 27, 2009 - What is the best "war" tune? Why?

Response - With God on Our Side by Bob Dylan. I think it says it all - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmDVyBceEv4

Lets see how much I can paste....

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war

The basic problem here is the expectation of pop music making the artist and record company filthy rich. Frankly they do not deserve "solid gold humvees" => listen to one very popular artist's view http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz-grdpKVqg

Response - Ives, Stravinsky, Copeland, Debussy, Shostakovitch the most. Michael Harrison is a good recent find of a living microtonal composer. http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=2ieHZ5qmJZI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1vaXBotrAI&feature=related And then I like earlier music like Renaissance choral music and Gregorian chat.

Apr 28, 2009 - What are ideas for TiS to grow its group of users and musicians?

Response - edit or better yet make everything entirely user driven - AoTM - ROC - locking threads - or better yet deleting - after a period of total chaos the site would eventually reach equilibrium. /edit oh wow... getting rid of the abuse by users of ratings, reviews would be a good start. Not having a helper admin that does his job in an insulting, condescending, hypocritical manner would be another.

Meant "dissing each other and themselves FOR being amateurs".

and others then it could ever be worth. If we went on with his plans our site, our motto would likely be "where the amateurs roam" and most of the discussions would involve people dissing each other and themselves for not being amateurs...plus joke-albums would run rampant. The only thing an insulting attitude "cleans out", IMVHO, is reputation of the person dishing out the random insults.

Ron was a rather talented guy (musician/programmer) who simply didn't agree with many of my opinions and apparently went through utmost efforts to convince me to kick myself off the site. To his credit, he did help me convert the song previews to better quality and used his perfect pitch to help me find slightly mis-tuned samples in my tracks but, beyond that, I think it's fair to say his "make the site better by cleaning up the non-elite" attitude caused far more problems to myself a

the spectra joke album. A person in a position of power IMHO should not participate in this sort of thing if they want respect.

Yes. No one have I talked to said the SW affair was handled correctly. Before Ron called people "attention whores" the site was so busy my releases were getting lost in the upload stream and I couldn't keep up listening. After Ron's fuck up and then leaving the site to hang for a month (or more?) a slew of artists left and the traffic on the site collapsed. Now a good release gets 20 listens and tops the charts. - and don't even get me to talking about Ron actively promoting the spectr

Apr 27, 2009 - If you could change sheet music to fit modern music theory, what changes would you make?

Response - http://www.earle-brown.org/media/scores/full.33.jpg - to amplify ice9 - music theory, in the sense as you know it, just collates and tries to explain what HAS happened. So, in common usage, the question makes no sense because NEW music implies usage that is NOT common practice if it truly is modern; i.e. new. Now.... there are people, especially the microtonal crowd, who develop theories as to why this or that tuning is a good one to use. But... that is out in left field (still) and I'm willing to bet DJ Nutsack's support underwear not what you were talking about.

Well, that certainly clears things up.

Apr 26, 2009 - are you more creative during one season versus another? for example, you make more music in winter than spring. which season and why?

Response - My creativity goes in spurts on a years time scale. 1979-1980, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1993, 1996-2000 2007 - often influenced by what toys I purchased.

Apr 25, 2009 - Do you prefer to buy singles or albums? why?

Response - Albums because if an artist is good they have more to say than just a single.

Apr 24, 2009 - Would you like to see a compos feature on the website where you create, enter and manage compos?

Response - that sounds like a good idea

Apr 23, 2009 - A recent study found that people who pirate music the most also buy the most music. What do you think about these results? Is piracy good for the music business?

Response - yes - because CDs are a very expensive way to discover new music. In the olden days people copied cassettes for each other and no one called them pirates then. In fact the stores all carried "high speed dubbing" cassette decks.(Did we have a question like this already? I've made this point before.)

Apr 22, 2009 - What is the best place to get samples?

Response - http://clones.soonlabel.com/public for gigs of sound fonts and wavs. But I generally make my samples at home if I'm using something other than generic instruments.

Apr 20, 2009 - Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack received the grammy for best soundtrack in a movie? Do you agree with this choice? If not, who should have won and why?

Response - I really don't care.

Apr 19, 2009 - What instrument would you like to see in Rock Band?

Response - an AK47 => Danger Music is an experimental form of avant-garde 20th and 21st century classical music. It is based on the concept that some pieces of music can or will harm either the listener or the performer. Although many extreme examples of danger music direct performers to use sounds so loud that they will deafen the participants, or ask performers to throw antipersonnel bombs into the audience, danger music can also be used in a more mundane way. For instance a piece could be written in which the volume of the music steadily increases causing the audience to fear that it will make them defecate in their trousers (see Brown note), although it might never reach that point.

In that case...if I passed gas at a concert (especially near a bunch of smokers), the concert would automatically have to be re-classified as "danger music".

truly that is a disappointment. I guess its back to plain ole antipersonnel bombs then. oh the boredom

As much as I cherish the banner idea of causing the audience to fear an impending brown note (because that may become a self fulfilling prophecy), I found some degree of comfort in learning that the concept of said note is just an urban myth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_note
