A good theory class would require you to write music and I think that is fun. Even though I poo poo common practice that is only because its all been done (obviously). The music written using those rules does work incredibly well and I thought it was cool when learning and putting into practice for assignments.

Because it's lecture material. Most professors would end up lecturing their class to death.

Mar 20, 2010 - What movie(s) have you watched twice in theaters?

Response - Only twice or more than once? My brother and I watched Jurassic Park about 10 or 12 times in the theater. Of course that was 16 or 17 years ago, when matinee tickets were $1.50.

Woo! Budget theaters rock!

Feb 28, 2010 - In places like India, singers often have "gurus" that teach them the command of voice. Many Western country singers do not use such "masters." Do these masters add value or are they no longer needed?

Me: Vaguely. My speedometer tops out at 100.
Cop: I'm going to have to write you up for this.

Nov 02, 2009 - TiS may close down by end of year... no time by Mysterium to maintain the site. Could the community pull together roughly $200 per month to keep the site up? If not the site, will shut down. Let me know your thoughts.

Response - I'm actually a little surprised TiS has gone on this long, given the fact it hasn't had any real administration for so long.

Unfortunately I think this is all coming too late in the game. Maybe this would have been successful (or stood a better chance anyway) a year-and-a-half ago when TiS actually had a fair bit more traffic and activity, and users had a much more positive outlook on the development. People were offering to assist both financially and administratively long ago, but you neither responded nor promoted any users to a level where they could help. Even roncli has doffed his admin hat because the site has essentially been left to the dogs.

I'd love to see TiS stick around, but for a community-funded effort to work you should have jumped on the wagon back when everyone else was still here and while people were still excited to help. I doubt the 2 or 3 dozen active users here right now would be willing or able to pony up $2,400 a year for something they can get elsewhere for free.

You've just waited too long to ask for help.

Jul 05, 2009 - Is having a songwriter better than having the singer write their own songs?

Response - I think that depends largely on the singer and the songwriter. Bob Dylan is a hell of a songwriter but not so great at singing (at least I think so). Some singers couldn't write music to save their lives (some can't even really sing either). Some songwriters write crap.

I think the important thing is for those that aren't good at doing something to realize that bitter truth and stick to doing what they are good at, be it singing, songwriting, both, or neither.

@visceral We lack all kinds of administration. Like no moderation of reviews (that's why most people stopped reviewing here), no control of what people upload here, and there should be some actual rewards for what you upload, more compos and such. No administration of the sort is here. The site is kept in the air, and that's where it ends now. Response - At this particular moment in time, free. I like Radiohead's 'pay whatever you think it's worth' approach, though, at least as far as albums go. Some songs aren't fit to give away, however, so a minimum price taking into account the production overhead, marketing, and the nature of your average unhappy customer service caller bawling your ears out should warrant a price somewhere in the ballpark of 'I don't have a fucking clue'. Actually sam's club gives away generous samples.

Apr 21, 2009 - Does anyone want to collaborate on making some cool music this week? If so post here what you want to do.

Response - Awww, I thought we were going to be discussing whether or not midiman fell off his rocker :(

That still makes TiS rather unpredictable. Is that good news?

Man! You beat me to the punch line with just seconds to spare :)

Apr 20, 2009 - Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack received the grammy for best soundtrack in a movie? Do you agree with this choice? If not, who should have won and why?

Response - Never heard of it. 4:20. That reminds me of a stupid story.

Apr 19, 2009 - What instrument would you like to see in Rock Band?

Response - Tuba, and it'd have to have a working spit valve.

Yeah, because man if that thing ever clogs, you're going to get sick for sure - and that can't be good for your "Rock Band" score!

Apr 18, 2009 - What band should Guitar Hero use for their next game?

Response - A waist band. America is getting too girthy.

Apr 17, 2009 - What is the memorable type of dance you can think of? why?

Response - Square, because it's line dancing in two dimensions and I happen to agree with slammy.

Apr 15, 2009 - Do you think games such as Rockband and Guitar Hero are good for the music industry?

Response - Sure, but as clones points out who really cares? I think it's kind of sad myself. I once encountered 2 kids drooling over Guitar Hero and trying to decide which console they wanted it on, how they'd save up the money, etc. I asked no one in particular "why not save a little more and buy a real guitar?" They looked at me like they'd never realized that was an option.

Apr 14, 2009 - What is the most appropriate song for paying taxes?

Response - I don't know about songs but the idiom "blood from a stone" seems appropriate.

Apr 13, 2009 - Who's your fave TiS artist (except yourself!) and why?

Response - Just one? But there are so many to choose from :S How about a half-dozen or so of my favorites, not necessarily in any order:

Cathedral of Failure (where's that next release?!)
Ceekayed
orkabot
The CanarY
Libris
Eyspire
gilgamesh
Barry Van Oosterwhatshisface

And I have to make myself stop there.

Apr 12, 2009 - In the world of direct music downloads, do record labels still matter?

Response - I like Courtney Love's idea on that. There are still many people who appreciate having a physical medium that contains a higher quality version of a downloadable song. I'm a bit of an audiophile myself, and I prefer to go to a store and buy music on a CD. The nice thing about being able to download the same music is that I can preview the songs on a CD to see if it's even worth buying. This tends to encourage songwriters to stay away from releasing crappy albums with one or two good songs that you've already heard on the radio, since the people downloading previews won't want to pay album prices for one good song amid boatloads of junk.

I think the only reason the labels don't like MP3s is because they can't directly (or even indirectly) control distribution. If they'd get their heads out of their butts they'd realize that it's a great way to promote album sales, provided the albums are any good.

Maybe they just don't like people finding out about crap albums before they've bought them.

Apr 11, 2009 - Have you been affected by the "economy"? How so?

Response - I got laid off and have had an extremely difficult time getting another job because of it :/ But things seem to be on a upswing right now so my prospects are better than they were 6 months ago.

Apr 10, 2009 - Is it better for musicians to give out their music for free and raise concert prices or to strike a balance?

Response - I think money is overrated.

Apr 09, 2009 - What type of food do you think movie theaters should sell that they do not today?

Response - Watermelon. Then you'd have ammunition to use against the people who bring their babies and cell phones.

Wait a minute. Overripe produce. It's much better.

Apr 08, 2009 - Why doesn't McDonald's sell hotdogs?

This. This is the correct answer.

Apr 07, 2009 - Continuing from yesterday, since the question was posted so late... Mysterium's out of questions. He needs questions for Vitamin D, post them here. He'll scrape the forum as well.

Response - What's the most generic question you can think of?
